Product Summary

The fluoropolymer Teflon™, from Chemours™, is a versatile material with a myriad of applications in the electronics, chemical processing, food & pharmaceuticals, transportation, and specialty industries.

While Teflon™ is best known to the world as the coating that stops eggs from sticking to the frypan, there is far more to fluoropolymers than non-stick coatings, and they come in various forms – including films.

With five film centers across North America – three in the USA, one in Canada and one in Mexico – PolymerFilms is your value-adding authorized distributor of Teflon™. We can provide you with the specific variants you need in the dimensions and quantities you want, and give advice if you need some help deciding which film to choose.

All types come in various gauges. And an invisible surface treatment on one or both sides to enable bonding with adhesive is available for most gauges.

The transparent, thermoplastic Teflon™ films offer unrivaled mechanical, chemical, electrical mechanical, thermal and electrical properties that make them easy to fabricate and apply to a vast range of fields.

Product Benefits

Smooth surface for writing on, and easy to clean

Simplifies the design and production process for a wide range of products, saving time and money. These films are outstanding for the fabrication methods and processes listed below. Because you can process them using conventional equipment and techniques without compromising their composition and properties, there is no need to spend extra on special equipment and training.
- Heat-sealing
- Thermoforming
- Vacuum-forming
- Heat-bonding
- Welding
- Metallizing
- Laminating with other materials such as plastics and elastomers
- Die-stamping
- Bonding as a hot-melt adhesive

Enables production of deep containers not possible with other films
Anti-stick properties: Release film is quick and easy to remove, saving time and improving customer satisfaction

Chemically inert and resistant to almost all chemicals*, such as solvents, at high temperatures and pressures, Teflon™ films suit equipment in harsh environments that need protection from corrosion and mechanical failure, such as chemical tanks and high-pressure piping.

Moreover, they have low permeability to liquids, gasses and organic vapors and exhibit low moisture absorption. This makes them ideal as fuel hose permeation barriers in aircraft.

* Excluding molten alkali metals, gaseous fluorine, and some complex halogenated compounds like chlorine trifluoride.

Excellent insulator that protects valuable equipment and does not suffer electric tracking. Both film types are highly reliable for electrical equipment because they:
- Retain their electrical properties across large expanses of film
- Display high dielectric (insulating) strength (Tefzel™: max. 160 kV/mm for 0.025-mm film [4,000 V/mil]; Teflon™: max. 260 kV/mm for 0.025-mm film [6,500 V/mil])
- Do not undergo electrical tracking, are non-wetting, and do not char in a fire
- Have a very low dielectric constant (Teflon™: 2.0; Tefzel™: 2.6) and power factor that fluctuate little over wide temperature and frequency ranges.
When used as flexible circuit substrates and photovoltaic glazing, for example, these properties help to maintain high performance and prolong the service life of electronic devices.

Does not distort underlying structures when the temperature changes

Easy to form into desired shapes with conventional equipment and methods, saving money on new equipment and training

High stress-cracking resistance prolongs service life, saving replacement costs and improving customer satisfaction due to better reliability

High transmissibility of UV and other radiation (excl. far infrared) prevents breakdown under strong sunshine

All variants of Teflon™ are stable when exposed to the outdoors – with Teflon™ FEP proven to show no adverse effects after 20 years of direct exposure to the Florida sun. As such, they are suitable as membranes to protect such diverse outdoor structures as greenhouses, satellite radomes, and advertising signage from water and impact damage.

These films feature high transmittance of ultraviolet and all other light except far-infrared radiation. That means they absorb very little of the UV light causes plastics to break down, hence the long service life.

Teflon™ films are highly resistant to impact and tearing, making them ideal for sterilized medical pouches and airbag deployment systems where safety is crucial. Also, with a minimum continuous service temperature of -240°C (-400°F) Teflontm films stay strong at very low temperatures, making them useful for applications at cryogenic applications such as vials and hoses in the medical field.

Teflon™ films are free of plasticizers and other impurities that reduce stability, and Chemours’ strict quality control system ensures that all films are of uniform gauge and free of voids

Maintains its properties from -240 to 260°C (-400 to 500°F), so protects against most chemicals at elevated temperatures and pressures, and also functions in cryogenic environments. Each with a broad continuous service temperature range, these films suit applications that require films to function without failing at very high and/or very low temperatures.
- Teflon™ PFA: -240 to 260°C (-400 to 500°F)
- Teflon™ LF and FEP: -240 to 205°C (-400 to 400°F)

Both Teflon™ and Tefzel™ also serve as outstanding hot-melt adhesives for bonding other materials together. Melting ranges are:
- Teflon™ PFA: 300 to 310°C (572 to 590°F)
- Teflon™ LF: 260 to 280°C (500 to 536°F)
- Teflon™ FEP: 250 to 280°C (482 to 536°F)

Challenges and Solutions

Outdoor structures are exposed to various conditions such as extreme temperatures, moisture, UV radiation, and chemical pollutants. Over time, these factors can lead to corrosion, rust, deterioration, and structural damage, impacting the longevity and performance of the structures. The challenge is finding a reliable and effective solution to protect outdoor structures and ensure their durability and functionality in such demanding environments.
For an outdoor structure located in extreme weathered environments, the use of Teflon™ can protect from extreme weather conditions.
Graffiti can be a significant issue, defacing public and private property, causing aesthetic. Traditional methods of graffiti removal often involve labor-intensive and costly processes, including chemical solvents, power washing, or repainting.
The use of Teflon™ is an efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution to combat graffiti and minimize the associated maintenance and repair costs. Teflon™ can also provide a protective coating that allows for easier removal of graffiti without causing further damage to the underlying surface.
You need to protect sensitive electronic equipment in a compact and limited space. In many applications, such as electronic devices, circuit boards, or aerospace components, there is a constant demand for smaller and more compact designs. However, these delicate electronic components are vulnerable to damage from moisture, dust, chemicals, and other environmental factors.
Teflon™ provides a protective coating or barrier that can safeguard sensitive electronic equipment without adding excessive bulk or compromising the limited available space.
Flexible circuit substrates are used in various industries, including electronics, automotive, and aerospace, where they provide the flexibility and reliability required for intricate circuit designs. However, these substrates must also exhibit long fatigue life and high resistance to cracking to withstand repeated bending and flexing without compromising performance.
Teflon™ provides the desired characteristics of long fatigue life and high resistance to cracking, addressing the challenge of producing flexible circuit substrates that can endure rigorous usage conditions.
Chemical plant components often handle harsh chemicals, high temperatures, pressure, and corrosive substances that can degrade and damage equipment and components over time. The challenge is finding a protective solution that can withstand these aggressive environments and effectively extend the lifespan of the plant components.
Teflon offers a potential solution by providing excellent chemical resistance and corrosion protection, reducing the impact of aggressive substances on the equipment. By minimizing corrosion and degradation, Teflon helps to save maintenance and replacement costs, addressing the challenge of maintaining the longevity and reliability of components in chemical plant environments.
Many films have limitations or restrictions imposed when it comes to design and manufacturing capabilities. Limitations may include inadequate flexibility, poor tensile strength, or limited formability, preventing the production of intricate or specialized products like deep cryogenic vials.
The LF film's exceptional drawing enables a greater variety of products to be designed and manufactured, such as deep cryogenic vials, than are possible with other variants.
